Hello, and welcome to Emeryville Soccer Club!
My name is Mia Arakaki, and I'm a Bay Area native who's been involved in sports for as long as I can remember, from ballet and gymnastics to diving, softball, basketball, and of course, soccer. I was a member of the Cal North Olympic Development State team and played with Bay Area Premier soccer clubs throughout high school. I went on to play Division I college soccer and continue to play adult recreational soccer in Emeryville and San Francisco.
These days, I’m also a mom to a middle schooler who, unlike me, doesn’t have the same competitive drive (which isn’t a bad thing at all, just different). While I would have been thrilled for him to try out for competitive teams, I’m equally happy that he pursues what makes him happy—reading anime, ninja warrior training, teaching himself piano, playing video games, and participating in soccer (or any sport) recreationally with friends.
Not every child will grow up to play on the Cal North State ODP team or Division I soccer, and that’s perfectly okay. What’s important is that our young people get out there, move their bodies, connect with others, build community, have caring role models, and learn valuable lessons about teamwork, perseverance, and resilience. Recreational soccer can teach all of that and more.
This belief inspired me to create Emeryville Soccer Club. And who knows, maybe my younger daughter will inherit my competitive spirit. But even if she doesn’t, I’m committed to pushing for equal access to playing fields and recreational sports opportunities for girls. Participation in team sports is invaluable for girls, empowering them to feel confident in their bodies and abilities, and helping them to develop lifelong friends—all of which contribute to healthier, happier lives.
Thank you for joining us at Emeryville Soccer Club. Let's play, learn, and grow together, as we build a brighter future through soccer!
